How the Professional Chinese test works and how to prepare

Professional Chinese is the paper that worries international students most. It is 80 questions in 90 minutes, and the whole paper is in Chinese. There are two versions: Humanities and Science.

What kinds of questions appear

From the official outline, the paper checks whether you can use Chinese for university study. In our practice section you will find question types such as:

• Characters and pronunciation — choosing the right reading of a character with several pronunciations.
• Word choice — measure words, filling the blank with the right word.
• Word meaning — finding the word with the closest meaning.
• Sentence order — putting four sentences into a logical paragraph.
• Completing sentences — choosing the second half that fits the connective words.
• Reading — short passages with a question at the end.

Humanities or Science?

The Science version uses more vocabulary from mathematics, physics and chemistry: temperature, speed, solution, current. If you will study engineering or science, expect your university to ask for the Science version.

An eight-week plan

1. Weeks 1–2: take one full mock exam to find your weak areas.
2. Weeks 3–6: practise one topic a day in topic practice; write every mistake and its reason in your mistake book.
3. Weeks 7–8: one timed mock every weekend, and redo your mistakes until each one is marked "mastered".
